Many people cannot avoid working night, especially with jobs that require multiple shifts like nurses, security guards and delivery drivers. It is challenging to work against your body clock. However, there is a solution. Below are the most effective tips for how to stay awake and be productive overnight.

1.      Sleep late in the morning or noon prior to the shift. Many night shift employees thought that sleeping early in the morning will help them stay alert at night. Wrong. If you sleep early, you will also tend to wake up earlier (like in the afternoon) and will never be able to go back to sleep again. The solution: stay up in the morning until around noon (when you feel drowsy). This will help you sleep soundly during the day and prepare you for the night.

2.      Eat light dinner similar to breakfast menu. A breakfast menu consists of light meals that are designed to give you energy boost like cereals and banana. If you need the same boost at night then replace heavy meals with a light breakfast menu. This will help your digestions, relieve constipation (due to overnight work) and will not make you drowsy just to digest the food.

3.      Drink enough coffee. Having 2 cups of good coffee should be enough to keep you alert. Caffeine overdose will cause you trembling and heartbeat palpitation. Drink one before going to work and another one during a break period. Never drink coffee beyond 3am for it make it difficult for you to sleep at day.

4.      Make use of break periods. Rest during break period, but do not sleep. Sleeping will only make you drowsier. All you need is rest your eyes away by closing it during a nap or walk around, away from the computer. Playing games or surfing the internet during break period will only cause you fatigue. Set the alarm 5-10 minutes before break is over.

5.      Use a nap zapper alarm. A nap alarm or nap zapper is designed to wake you up when your head is in a nod position. It is highly effective especially if you really are a morning person but need to work at night. It is shaped like a regular earpiece that fit comfortably on your ear. As long as your head remains up, the device remains standby. When you begin to drop your head, the device will automatically vibrates, a signal that you will surely notice. It is less disturbing than an alarm clock (imagine setting one in the office) and highly effective to wake you up. This will also help you lot when driving home in the morning.

The above tips are already familiar to you, but doing it right will make the difference. It is also recommended to get yourself a nap alarm or nap zapper if you really cannot control your drowsiness during the times that you need to be awake the most.
