Not many people are into a hobby that pays them back.  Most people have hobbies that end up costing them quite a bit of money.  If you are into riding horses, you have to put out quite a bit of money to feed and keep the horses.  If you are into riding motorcycles, need to put out lots of money for purchasing the motorcycles, maintenance, gas, an insurance.  If you're into the hobby of panning for gold, you stand a chance of making a lot of money while enjoying something that you love to do.

Panning for gold can be quite relaxing but it can also be quite exciting.  I promise that you'll never forget the first time you sift through a pan of sand and discover gold staring up at you from the bottom of the pan.  Once this happens to you, you will be hooked and it will be hard to get you thinking about anything else.  Many amateur gold prospectors say that once you have found a little bit of gold, you instantly catch "gold fever" and want to spend all of your time looking for more.

If you are new to gold panning or even if you've done it before I would recommend that you become a member of Gold Prospectors Association Of America.  You can become a GPAA member for only $67.50 and this will include everything you need to start your hobby of gold panning.  It will include the gold mining field guide, a DVD, a year subscription to the GPAA magazine, bumper stickers, hats, and much more.

For those people who are just getting started out in the hobby, you probably won't have very many ideas of where to start panning for gold.  You can just pick any old part of a river and start looking but that won't be very productive and you could spend quite a lot of time looking in a place that isn't productive.  A better solution would be to go to a web site called www.goldmapsonline.com and buy one of their maps.  These maps show all the registered gold mining claims for your particular area.  I'm sure that you are aware that you're not allowed to mine for gold on someone else's legal claim but there's nothing that says you can't mine for gold in areas near those claims.  There is a huge benefit to knowing where people are already finding gold and these maps will reveal those exact locations to you.  We live in Montana so we bought the Montana gold panning maps and they have helped us find some great spots.
