One of the key components in your car's engine is not a component at all, it's a liquid. Motor oil is vital to the safe and long lived functioning of an engine. Motor oil has three critical jobs to perform that make your car run smoothly. Its first job is to provide lubrication between moving elements inside the core of the engine. This includes objects like pistons moving in the cylinders and bearings rotating in the crankshaft. Without oil they would not be able to work at such high speeds and temperatures as attrition will take place between the metal parts, wearing them away and making them ineffective. Motor oil will so provides cooling to these components removing heat that cannot be extracted by the car's cooling system and finally cleaning is performed to remove the buildup of black sludge which is a result of the chemicals left over in the oil from the combustion process. Because oil removes heat by transferring it from the large surface area of metal it covers into the oil. If black sludge is covering the metal it cannot cool as effectively.
Over time the chemicals in the oil that help it to perform become depleted. This is why motor oil has to be replaced, how often depends on your car. The typical motorist can get their oil replaced when they have a service or they can do it themselves, it is one of the easier car maintenance jobs to perform but if you are not interested in DIY repairs than it can be a nuisance. One way to make it easier is to choose an oil change pump to pump the oil out of the engine. This avoids the complications of getting underneath the car. These units can also be known as an oil extractor and can be purchased from online stores for as little as $50.
