For most, the Christmas season is a time of cheer, happiness and joy. However, that's not the case for everyone! Some people find the holidays to be a bit of a melancholy occasion. For those of you who might feel a bit down during the Christmas season, let's take a look at some somber carols to commiserate with.
We'll begin with a song by the king of rock and roll himself, Elvis Presley. The ultimate broken-heart carol, "Blue Christmas" was originally recorded by Ernest Tubb in 1948, but was made popular when Presley recorded his rendition in 1957. The gloomy tune tells of a "blue blue blue Christmas without you."
This next pick may not be thought of as a somber song by everyone, but when Bing Crosby first recorded "I'll Be Home for Christmas" in 1943, it was certainly intended to be one. As the United States was in the midst of fighting World War II, the song soon became a go-to ballad for those spending the holiday season away from their friends and family. Many artists have since recorded their own version for various occasions in history, like Josh Groban, whose 2007 version was intended to comfort families of soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
To truly bring the blues to our journey through heartbreaking holiday hymns, we have to call upon Charles Brown's 1960 hit "Please Come Home for Christmas." The ballad reached #1 on the Billboard Christmas songs chart, and is yet another lonely lament about spending Christmas alone, and a plea to a lover to return. In 1978, The Eagles recorded their own version, which also became a hit, landing in the top 20 of Billboard's Hot 100.
There may be no more tear-jerking Christmas carol than Christian group Newsong's country tune "Christmas Shoes." First released in 2000, the song's story, told through the eyes of an unsuspecting shopper, is that of a little boy wanting to buy his mother the perfect gift before she dies. The song certainly tugged on the heart-strings of listeners everywhere, and the song was adapted into a novel and TV movie two years later.
Whatever one's reason may be to feel down during the holiday season, songs like these continue to give us all a means to share our misery. If you're feeling a bit blue, give one of these tracks a play. In music, you're never alone!
