Perimenopause is the time period leading up to menopause, or the total loss of fertility. It's actually during perimenopause that menopause signs and symptoms first make their appearance. This phase may last for months or up to 10 years and ends once menopause is reached. Since menopause can happen any time between 40 and 55 years old, it's possible for a woman to begin perimenopause during her early 30s, but mid to late 40s is the most common time period for beginning perimenopause.
Each woman will experience perimenopause and menopause in a unique way due to a variety of factors such as genetics and lifestyle choices such as weight, stress level, and overall health. In fact, so many things can influence menopause that it's almost impossible to predict. Even views on aging, mental health and overall happiness can have an impact on perimenopause and menopause signs. A change in monthly menstrual cycles is an early indicator of the hormone imbalance changes taking place. Missed periods or a change in blood flow can indicate that changes are beginning to take place in the production of estrogen and progesterone. It's these hormones that are responsible for regulating ovulation and controlling fertility, so any change in their production leads to changes in fertility levels. Changing hormone levels are also responsible for a lot of menopause symptoms such as hot flashes and menopause night sweats.
The most common perimenopause symptom is hot flashes but other frequently reported symptoms include insomnia, mood swings, night sweats, facial hair, muscle soreness, vaginal dryness and a loss of libido. Less common symptoms include clinical depression and anxiety, ear ringing (tinnitus) and formication (the sensation of things crawling on or under the skin). There is a huge range of symptoms that are associated with menopause. Some women go through menopause quite easily while experiencing no symptoms while other women have a very difficult transition.
