Blackout blinds offer an inexpensive and attractive solution for people who are having trouble sleeping or who wake up feeling unrested. Even if you do not think that light is causing your poor rest, darkening your room with the use of specialized window coverings is still a good first step to solving the problem.
Studies show that being in a dark room is necessary for good healthy sleep. According to a report published by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, melatonin protects our DNA from oxidation. Other studies show that the brain’s production of melatonin is negatively affected if you sleep with the light on, or with too much light in your room. At nighttime, light could be coming into your room from a big moon or a city streetlight or headlights in the road outside.
Blinds designed to keep the light out are available in a wide range of prices, from around $5 to well over $100. You can get them to cover most window sizes, even sliding glass doors. The best blackout blinds are made out of material other than vinyl, which may be made of toxic materials that can outgas into your bedroom. Most blinds are made with a honeycomb cell structure, either a single row or double rows, and lined with Mylar, which is said to keep out 100 percent of all visible light and UV rays. The cells also provide insulation, helping to cut cooling costs by keeping the sun from heating up your rooms, and helping to cut heating costs by keeping warm air in. For maximum insulation (and maximum dark), try blackout window curtains, which cover the entire window area instead of just the window.
Blackout blinds are appreciated by anybody who needs to sleep during the day -- not only night-shift workers but also infants and elderly or anyone who needs to nap. One great benefit of keeping out the light this way is that you’ll also be keeping out up to 40 percent of the noise, making it that much more likely your sleep will be restful.
