Oak flooring is a popular type of wood plank flooring. The unique grain of its wood as well as its distinct color tones has made it a popular wood choice by interior decorators. Its relative hardness also makes it ideal for customers who not only want a good looking floor but also something that will last a long time. There are two major types of oak flooring available in the market today. One of these is called the solid oak flooring while the other is called engineered oak flooring.

Solid oak flooring is made from a solid block of wood. Depending on how the wood plank flooring is sawed from the oak trunk, there will be unique and distinctive grain characteristics. The planks are relatively heavy as a testament to the hardness and density of oak. Traditionalists prefer the solid wood plank floor as it is the best version in terms of quality and looks. Not only does solid wood plank flooring have a distinctive and awesome look, but its technical characteristics will add value to the room aside from just pure decoration. Solid oak flooring is also known to mature and improve with age. Colors will take a darker tone and the wood itself will mature making the grain of the wood take a classic and timeless look.

Engineered wood plank flooring is a fairly recent development. While solid flooring has been around since the first human started to build houses out of wood, engineered oak flooring is a product of the industrial age. Made to give the same aesthetics as a solid wood flooring, the engineered flooring is made up of a variety of woods and materials in the inside layers while uses a thin layer of solid oak as its surface, effectively reproducing the distinctive oak floor look at the fraction of the price of a solid plank floor.
