We are all aware that without labels, products will never sell. What we see in supermarkets is guided by government laws to ensure that the labelling of each product adheres to certain standards that all manufacturers of both dry and fresh goods must follow. Labels are very crucial to any entrepreneur, whether small scale or big time.
Let us start with the small scale businessmen. Many people have the creative hands to form their own products and sell them to their direct circles of influence. We see them around us. Full-time mothers for example have the ability to create items that could be of good use in the home or in the studies of their children. If a mother is good at baking, she can always make money by selling breads, pastries, and cakes. A mother who is good at cooking can sell her best-tasting dishes when a neighbour is in need of a food caterer for a special occasion.
We see a lot of young entrepreneurs who are still in their studies selling stuff to come up with extra allowance. They can sell women’s fashion accessories in school that they have personally made, or have bought online from another country. There are also those who would buy bestselling items on marketing websites such as Amazon or eBay and then sell them to their peers; these could range from PSPs, DVDs, computer gadgets, to books, vitamin supplements, and imported food.
Take the case as well of fashionable ladies who have the ability to sell make-up, clothes and shoes while keeping their day jobs; or professional men taking the hobby of carpentry as a way to make additional income.
All around us, we see people who have very imaginative heads and strong guts to pursue their passion while performing others roles in their lives. In a way, they are making their own businesses. In these instances, making a product label for the goods they either make or “buy and sell” is a good way to jumpstart their businesses. The label doesn’t have to be fancy and expensive-looking. With the many resources we have these days as a result of the computer revolution, making personalized labels is such an easy task! Just by using MS Word and arming yourself with printable fabric sheets, computer and printer, scissors, cold water, flat iron, and in some instances needle and thread, sewing machine; you can now make a clothing label! With some stickers you can also do the same thing!
Small scale entrepreneurs should make the most with their products by installing even small-sized labels on their goods. To maximize the opportunity, they should include their contact information. When someone is satisfied with their work, it is easy for their customers to refer them to their friends and relatives. Of course that would mean additional customers.
In huge businesses, it’s a largely different story. They don’t make labels just with the thought of earning profits at the back of their heads. First, they need to make sure that the information they provide on the labels are true, honest, and not misleading; so as not ensure that they will get the choice of their target market. Second, they have to follow the guidelines set by government institutions in making product labels. These rules are complex because each product group should follow specific guidelines that differ from one another. For example, the detailed standards for making a product label for a cosmetic product is different from a food product.
